We are excited to begin a new adventure... things are uncertain right now, but no fear we will return. We loved being a part of the neighborhood & knowing all of you . Like all things in life change is always around the corner... Closing was something we were moving towards.... selling was really what we wanted. We had buyer that would have kept that warm welcoming feel & really added to the neighborhood, but there was a complaint about us & that forced the ball to start rolling with the city. The deal breaker was that we are required to be on pavement. My landlord & friend Rachel wasn't really interested in paving the lot since it was one of the few green spaces on Mississippi Ave. We would have had to pave across the lot from the alley & that was just unacceptable. So we decided to deconstruct.... Here are some pictures from over the years.
We had such great times here & will miss everyone.... but look at all the great memories. All the events we had Movie Night, Puppet Stock, & Live Music. Being a part of Eat Mobile & the Mississippi Street Fair was always a way to stretch my creative muscle..... I have always love creating space!

Thanks to everyone for all you support over the years! We will see you all around the neighborhood & keep in touch.

My dear friend Wendy was in a car mash up in LA..... some friends got together to organize a fund raiser for her expenses. We are helping out with 6 dozen cookies to 6 lucky people! The delicious flavors to choose from are our famous Ginger Lime Macaroons or the ever smokey Mesquite Chocolate Chunk. We will pack these up & send them to your door. cranberries & closing....

My favorite part of thanksgiving is cranberry sauce.... I always make extra so I can eat it by the bowl full before I ever think about roasting a turkey. I like to add fresh ginger, orange zest, & cinnamon sticks for some extra zip.

We decided to close down the trailer after the cold snap last week. Daisy (the little trailer we love) just gets to cold & needs to go into hibernation. So we will keep you all posted.....

It will be sad to see the lights dim...... she is so beautiful & full of love. Hope everyone had a peaceful holiday...

Winter Squash & Cookies

These are my new favorite. Little Dumpling Squash has been making it to are table almost every night of the week. They are tender, sweet & extra good with butter (of course). I think I will stuff some this week with sausage, bread & cheese. We will also have Black Bean Chili with Grilled Pork, Roast Chicken & Root Vegetable Soup, & Tuscan White Bean Soup. We will also have a Strata with Smoked Salmon & Thyme......and later in the week I want to make some Mac & Cheese with buttery bread crumbs. I have been going a little cookie crazy.... so we will have Molasses Ginger Cookies, Oatmeal with Fig & Walnut & Dark Chocolate Sable.

Thanks to everyone who stopped by last week! It was nice to see friendly faces. I got to work out the new menu & start to fine tune what everyone is craving for fall. Warm & Hearty seems to be the thing.

So this week I will concentrate on just that!

We will have the little bites like the bacon wrapped dates & deviled eggs.

We will also have a Braised Beef Short Ribs with grainy mustard & red wine, Creamy Polenta with Wild Mushroom Ragout, & a sloppy Roast Pork Sandwich with apple carrot slaw. Soups will be Chicken & Spaetzle, Cauliflower & Blue Cheese, Carrot Coconut, & Cranberry bean, Kale, & Sausage. Maybe even a Pumpkin Curry could be in the works. So just remember not everything will be available everyday but, you know you will find something tasty. We will also have for your sweet tooth Carrot Cake Cupcakes with Molasses Frosting, Coco Crisp Cookies & Ginger Lime Macaroons.

My how time flies....... I can't believe how much time has passed since I checked in last. Thanks to all of you who keep coming back to find the same old post, you are real troopers. We had a wonderful time in Hawaii. So beautiful & relaxing. The landscape is so amazing. We visited a beach with green sand, saw a rainbow eucalyptus, & saw some of the most colorful flowers. We stayed in this great little motel right on the beach.We could see the little schools of yellow fish from our room & wake up to the sound of the ocean. It was so nice to decompress.

Then we hit the ground running upon our return just 2 day before the Mississippi Street Fair. Icy Cold Watermelon Limeade for everyone! Then it was summer in full swing. I have been having fun making Ice Cream Sandwiches. Last week we had Roasted Banana & my Mom brought us some fresh raspberries from Sauvie Island so I had to make Ice Cream with them. I have been making them with a coco cookie I have made for years. It's very crisp & holds up nicely to the ice cream. This cookie recipe I tweaked a bit & it is now Gluten Free. So come by & see what flavor we have this weekend.

Puppets, Puppets here come the Puppets

So we are starting the Puppet season off on Friday June 25th with or with out Summer! Mudeye Puppet Company will open the season with Deepsy Diver. Come explore the underwater world & learn to protect our watershed. Show starts at 10am. & is $5 a person. We will have Fresh Huckleberry Muffins, Apple Butter Scones & plenty of delicious juice. So come get summer started with us.

We are really ready for summer. We extended our hours this pass weekend. We are now open Friday thru Monday 9-4. So if Summer would just hurry up & get here that would make us all happy. The Big juicer is back at work & we have been having a few more desserts on the menu. I have been inspired by custard, puddings & curds lately. I think I said that a million times Saturday night at the 3rd Annual Eat Mobile Event. We had a great time & walked away with the Best Style Award. You know that made me feel proud & humbled. Everyone seemed to love the granola goodness we were sharing..... Who knew so many people would love rhubarb. Crazy for it they were.

I have to hand it to William , Lena, & my Mom for with out them I would never have been able to pull it off. They scooped & dolloped over 1300 samples......

Thanks to everyone who came out to support a great cause MercyCorps NW is awesome! They really do good work. A special thanks to all the people who gave us their peoples choice marble..... I think we received more this year than ever with so many kind words. Congrats to all the winners. Garden State as always tasty & innovating the street food scene. Whiffies Fried Pies.... I mean who doesn't love fried pie ! Way to go Whiffies ....

Eat Mobile ..... sold out!

It's that time of year..... Eat Mobile is this Saturday under the Morrison Bridge. We will be serving up our deliciously crunchy gluten free granola with Greek yogurt & raspberry rhubarb compote. It's always tricky to pick what to do for this event. Not just one thing represents all we do at Moxie Rx. So we will be closing early on Saturday (1pm) to get ready for the event. Hope you got tickets & can enjoy what Portland has to offer while supporting MercyCorps NW all at the same time.

We opened this past weekend & thanks to everyone who stopped by to say hello. I really do miss everyone when we close down.
All the kids grow so much & I have to catch up with everyone & their adventures....This will be our 5th year in the little trailer.
We have lots of plans in the works.... puppet shows, movie nights & a big party to celebrate Daisy's 5th birthday!

Bye to 2009 & looking toward the future

It is hard to believe that 2009 is over. It is like a wave washed over me & when I stood up another year had passed. I'm so ready for a new decade! I can't wait to see what we do with our lives & business. We had a great season last year. So much press... it made me start to believe I really had something going on. Not just solely satisfying my need to nurture & connect with people. I had so may great food adventures this past year & got such inspiration from so many people.

Over the Holidays we went on a road trip to the Bay Area. It was our old stomping ground before moving to Portland. So I tried to go to all the places I loved & have missed. First stop Cafe Fanny. Alice Water's little cafe nestled in between a wine shop & the Acme Bakery. Oh the smell of bread all day long. I love this cafe so much it really speaks to me. Everything is simple & good

I always enjoyed breakfast the most..... fresh beignets with homemade jam. Eggs cooked just right with prosciutto that melts like butter in your mouth. Then relax & enjoy your cafe au lait. Is there a better way to start the day?

Another one of my favorites in the East Bay is the Holy Land. It's a kosher Israeli cafe. It is one of those places were I always get the same thing. That is rare for me but, I could never pass up the sampler plate with a side of falafe.The pickled carrots & beets, the super smooth hummus & the smokey baba ganoush, tabouli & tomato relish. It's the kind of thing I really could eat everyday.
So after a bellyfull of HolyLand I realized that Ici the little ice cream shop I had read about was just up the street. We had to stop in and check it out. I had a scoop of Rosemary Pinenut Brittle & Meyer Lemon. Wow..... creamy & what a treat they had wheat free cones! I had made brittle for the holiday so I was inspired by the use of herbs in theirs.
Our friends from New Zealand were staying in the Presidio. So we picked them up & went out for a traditional dinner at Brandy Ho's. It is one thing I really miss about the Bay Area & the East Coast is the Chinese food. I grew up on chicken with almonds, egg drop soup, & little cups of tea with no handles. Some of my fondest childhood food memories are of eating chinese food with my Mom in a dark restaurant with deep red booths. Where the hostess had a jet black beehive & would always give me an extra almond cookie.

Chocolate, Friends, & Brooklyn

Last week after closing the trailer for the season. I headed for the airport & found myself on my way to NYC. The impetus for the trip was that my very dear friend Hadley & her family were going to be in Brooklyn. They would be traveling all the way from New Zealand where they had moved 8 years ago. So I had to go & really who passes up the chance to spend a week in New York with much missed friends. I arrived after an easy plane ride to their Brooklyn flat. My own room ready with my favorite fresh hydrangeas & "Schoc" chocolate with lime & chili from the land down under. It was so great to see my friends & know that we were in for an adventurous week of food & catching up. Still being on west coast time I was up early the next morning. We left Jasper with the nanny, stopped for some coffee,(8oz americano is hard to find) ran into a friend from portland on the street (small world) then descended into the underground. On the G to the F or was it the F to The G it really is another world down there. Sun shining through the stairwell Manhattan was a buzz , as it has always been to me. We ended up in China Town & it was as if everything was alive. All the markets & sidewalk stands loaded with everything from the far east. We made are way to the village to have some lunch. While walking up 1st Ave. I remembered that there was a great Indian market I loved when I lived here. All the bags of curry leaves, mustard seeds, star anise, & on and on. So I had to score some nigella seeds that I have found hard to find in Portland & Hadley got some delicious mint chutney for later. As we were walking & trying to figure out where to eat we found ourselves in front of Momofuku. So we went for it & luckily got in just before the real rush. The place was bustling with people but we got a seat at the bar. We ordered rice cakes with chili & onion, savoy cabbage with honey crisp apple & their famous ramen. The rice cakes were more like gnocchi with a BBQ sauce but, the edges were crispy & the sauce rich with caramelized onion then topped with scallions. Super Yum! The savoy cabbage arrive warm with the apples still holding onto their crunch. Their was a flavor that I still can't put my finger on . It was as if they had figured out how to get the rich flavor of butter without the heavy creaminess. Over the top good. Hadley had a tasty dark & stormy slushie. Frozen drinks done right. So now it's back to the subway with a satisfied belly & dreams of what might be next. more soon. . . . . . hope all is well out there with you all.

Last Weekend of the Season

Fall is here all the trees are changing colors. Our season is comming to an end. We will be closing the trailer on Sunday November 1st. So come get the last biscuits & treats of 2009. We had a great year & thanks to everyone for your support. We will be back in the spring(hopefully March). For those of you wondering about our homemade EggNog. We are happy to report that Daisy is up & running. It will be worry fee from here on out. I believe we are truly ready for the summer season. Fresh juice is back on the menu & we have a few new additions. I have been trying my hand with some Gluten Free Baking as of late & very happy with the findings. We now have a version of our buckwheat waffle that is made with rice flour. We also have a few cookies that are sans the wheat! Still working on the muffin front but all things in good time. hope to see to all soon

Closed Due To Electrical Issues

We are sad to say that today we had some electrical problems at the trailer.... So we will be unable to open on Sunday as planned.
We had to pull the sink out & disrupt the inner workings of Daisy (the trailer). We solved most of the issues & will be open next weekend Friday, Saturday, & Sunday 9-3. Hope to see you all then..... enjoy the beautiful weather...

Jonny Sport Launch Party

This past weekend my friends Rachel Elizabeth & Dan Revel launched their bag & accessorie line Jonny Sport.The bags are made of this groovy basketball material that is 100% Vegan! We had a fun time setting up for the party & making vegan nibbles for everyone to enjoy. The launch was at the Cleaners at the ACE. I highly recommended for parties & events the space is so light & open.
I asked my friend Morgan the "Vegan Baking Queen" from Dovetail Bakery to make cupcakes for the party. I just have to say they were so moist & rich & purely delicious. Thanks again Ms Morgan! We will be open this weekend on Friday & Saturday..... maybe the rain will stop long enough to shine some sun on all of us! peace

We will be reopening on Thursday the 12th of February with new hours. We will be open on Thursday, Friday & Saturday 9am -3pm. Sorry no Sundays for now. I had to make the choice for our quality of life.(I never get to spend a day off with William). We will be offering all the old favorites with a few new lunchy options. End of Season

I was hoping to be open this weekend but the weather just isn't on my team. When it gets this cold our hoses freeze so we have no water. I hate to say, but it looks like we are closed for the season. Tommy is still planning to sell Christmas Trees on the lot Sat & Sun 10a-4p. We'll be there if we can. We were planning an open house for sunday to end the year but the snow shut us down early. Maybe an Opening Party will be in the works for January. I'll keep you posted. I just want to say thanks to everyone for all their support over this past year. We had a great one & hope to have an even better 2009.... We wish you the same.

We are just about ready for the Holiday Season.
Our friend Tommy started selling Trees, Wreathes,Garland last weekend & don't forget the miseltoe. The trees are local & organic The lot looks so festive & smells so nice. Our little enclosure is coming along nicely. If feels really cosy inside & we have been lucky with all this mild fall weather.We have soup now & hot drinks too.

Our enclosuer is 90% done & it is just in time for the windy rain.
We are getting it together for the holiday season... our friend Tommy will be selling trees, wreaths & garland on Saturdays & Sundays starting the 29th of November. Everyone has been asking how late we will be staying open this year & we decided to keep it going until the Sunday before Christmas (the 21st.....) I'll keep you all posted about specials for the season... like our homemade Egg Nog & other treats for the season

Mississippi Street Fair

It's that time of year..... the Mississippi Street Fair is this Saturday. We will be having a bake sale on the street. Crumb Muffins & Cream Scones will be offered as well as Ginger Lime Macaroons & Pignoli cookies. For something savory we will have all our yummy paninis. As for hot food you will be able to get a few of the favorites from the trailer. The Cheddar Biscuit with herbed egg & your choice of apple wood smoked bacon or smoked salmon. Fresh Watermelon Limeade & Mexican Iced Coffee will be on hand to wet your whistle. Let the craziness begin

We are very excited to host this event this summer & have added some shows with musical guest Sal DeBain.
Sal DeBain's music is contagious. Symptoms include outbursts of laughter and unstoppable foot-tapping, hand-clapping, dancing and jumping-up. His performances have been known to affect kids ages 1 - 101.

Summer is on it's way.... All the herbs in the garden are in bloom. Fresh Juice is back on the menu!
We have been getting Daisy (our trailer) ready for summer. We are building a fence & planting more garden on the back half of the lot. So everyone will be able to enjoy the space. All kinds of fun stuff is planed for the season. We will be having Puppet shows for kids on select Friday mornings throughout the summer. I had so much fun putting our booth together...I have always loved creating space.

We had a good time & every last cookie & muffin was given away.... The Ginger Lime Macaroons seemed to be the favorite with Cashew Butter & Sea Salt coming in a closed second.
All the kids were so sweet. They would get all wide eyed at the edge of the table & their little hand would reach for the Spiced Coco Crisps or a Lemon Lavender Shortbread....Then big grins would appear

All the food was delicious.... It was such a treat to be able to sample all the goodness. Lena had her mission to get us bites from every booth. We started with Goulash from Tabor warm & spicy..... then we had some Dahl with paneer from India Chaat House YUM.... The line for Asian Station Cafe was long but Lena offered to trade cookies for dumplings.... good thinking. We were set up next to Tita's Pista so we had easy access to crispy Lumpia.... We missed out on the Russian food ...So now I will have to make an effort to visit Julia at her mobile cafe. I'm a sucker for a Chocolate Cupcake thanks New Season. Rudy & Emily from Jr. Ambassador scooped the night away... I enjoyed the Smoked Salmon & Cream Cheese ice cream the smokey finish was very nice. I know this is more of a desserty dish but I love it for breakfast...... Steaming & Bursting with juicy fruit... creamy warm custard in every bite. Paired with a rich latte from the Fresh Pot what more could you want on a spring morning. We will be serving Clafouti this weekend filled with red plums & raspberries. (baked to order..... worth the wait)

Breakfast Bread Pudding & Obama

I've been dreaming of living on a farm lately.... getting fresh cream from cows & warm eggs from under the hens that lay them.
I love to make simple basics.... So last weekend I made a Breakfast Bread Pudding with Blood Orange Syrup & Creme Fraiche.
I made the creme fraiche..... Letting the cream & buttermilk sit in a thick ceramic crock & get thick overnight. I enjoy the slow process of watching it transform. I'm experimenting with a yogurt cheese this week. Will see what happens.
William & I went to see Mr. Obama last week & it really gave me a sense that maybe we can choose a new path. He speaks from a place in him that reflects a much deeper conversation we all need to be having as human beings.

We are glad to be back & excited for spring....

Meyer lemons are in season now & found their way into these lovely little bundt cakes.

All the favorites are back..... The Swell, The Buckwheat Belgian Waffle, & the Cheddar Biscuit being most missed!
We will have a few Specials this weekend....
Breakfast Bread Pudding with Blood Orange Syrup & Homemade Cream Fraiche ..... Eggs & Greens with Wild Mushrooms, Smoked Salmon, Roasted Leeks & a Lemon Thyme vinaigrette.
We know the rain isn't over just yet... So William built a few walls to keep you all dry...

He always does a great job & then I get to give it the Moxie Rx touch...

Valentine's Day

I'm sad that we will not be open this year for Valentine's Day.
I always have so much fun baking for the day of love.
We are working on getting the trailer ready to reopen on March 1st.

A New Year

We really are enjoying our break & the holidays were swell

I did a lot of baking for friends & family....
I was inspired by some new things this season...I used quince for the first time this fall & what a beautiful thing
I made crumb muffins with quince & currants. I love the subtle fragrance & discovered that a shot of the poaching liquid is very nice in a glass of champagne ....

I am trying to get the knack of this blogging stuff but I guess it is something that has to be in your blood....
I love to read about food & talk about it but just haven't found the groove for writing about it yet.

Moxie Rx is Closed for the Winter

We decided to close the trailer down for the season.....
The Rain & Cold take their toll on us in the winter months
So hibernation it will be & we will emerge in early spring
